About Perinatal Mental Health

According to findings from the National Mental Health Survey, the incidence of mental health disorders in India stood at 10.6% in 2016.The perinatal period, encompassing pregnancy and the postnatal phase, presents unique psychological challenges for women due to significant physiological and hormonal changes, rendering women more susceptible to perinatal mental disorders.

Common perinatal mental disorders (CMPDs) are the most frequent complications during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. The prevalence is highest among women in low- and middle-income countries at nearly 20%. Nearly 90% of all women who need support do not have access to PMH services.

Jhpiego, in collaboration with the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) and NHM Madhya Pradesh, has been taking significant strides in addressing Perinatal Mental Health (PMH) in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, with funding support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

This specific intervention involves active collaboration with the MP government and community-based organizations to raise awareness and enhance the capacity of service providers at both community and facility levels. The ultimate vision is to seamlessly integrate PMH into the existing Maternal, Neonatal, and Child Health (MNCH) services.
